7th Digital Arts: Designing a Book Cover

For this project you will be designing a new and original book cover for your favorite book.

1. First you will need to do some research. On the worksheet provided, write down the definitions for the following vocabulary words. You can find the definitions at the Scholastic Word Wizard:
  • graphics
  • publisher
  • creative
  • editor
  • layout
  • typography
2. Next lets learn about the history of books. Go to this website and fill in the blanks on your worksheet.

3. Now look through some examples of well-design book covers HERE.
Pick the three book covers you like the most. In complete sentences describe why you picked them and who designed it.
HERE are more great designs to look at.

4. Now it is time to start designing.
  • Create a new file in Adobe Photoshop. Make it 6 inches wide by 8 inches high, 300dpi.
  • Create your own original illustration or find photographs to use. You can only use copyright free images (from the links on the right).
  • Choose a font that reflects what your book is about. For example, you might not want to use a fancy, curly cursive font for a book about a sports star.
  • You will make 2 different designs for the same book cover. Make them very different from each other. Pay attention to details and take your time.
  • Save your designs to your folder, and to the "HAND IN FINAL WORK" folder
  • Have fun!
