8th Grade Web Design: Planning Your Website

There are a few guidelines for developing your website. Because we are beginners, it is best to start with a simple idea. Social networking sites like Facebook and Myspace are very complicated. So are gaming sites, and websites that play a lot of music and video. We will start by creating an informational website. This site should teach the viewer about a subject you are interested in. You can choose a person, a place or a thing (For example, my website will be devoted to ice cream).

Please fill out the worksheet.

1. What person, place or thing will your website be about?
(For example, website will be about ice cream)

2. What will it be called? Be creative with your website’s name.
(For example, my ice cream website will be called “Brain Freeze”)

3. What categories will your website have? You must have a minimum of 4.
(For example, my categories will be: 1. The history of ice cream, 2. Where to buy the best ice cream, 3. Ice Cream Recipes, 4. Ice Cream Photos and Art, and 5. Reviews.)

4. List the kinds of information you will need to collect.
(For example, I would need to research the history of ice cream, the names and address of shops that sell good ice cream, ice cream recipes, photos of ice cream and ice cream in art, and I may want to taste test different ice cream flavors.)

5. Turn your worksheet over. On the back draw a map of your website on the template.
It is very important to start with a good, detailed plan before you begin on the computer. This map should have drawings of what each page will look like, and where they will link. You website map must be approved by Ms. Vermeer.
